I stumbled upon this at the London Science Museum.
It’s a cross section of a Boing 747 and it’s revealing.
The mid section is what we’re familiar with, seats and overhead compartments. Down below, note how the cargo container is contoured to fit the hull. In this plane, there’s an upper deck too. The level is narrower and hence fewer seats but you can see the overhead storage is still there. I thought this was a neat idea.
