I’ve been in many caves and I have my favorites. Luray and Carlsbad Caverns were alone at the top of the list until today. Kartchner Caverns was revealed to the world in 1999 after over a decade of secretive development. Never before have I been in a cave so pristine, so well preserved, so artistically presented. The finale is a light show of a feature called Kubli Khan. It was beautiful and moving and extremely well done. Kartchner really rocks!

Summary: Toying with Tech
My goal was to spend time getting to know New Mexico but I had to get there first. On this trip I chose to ease up on my pace, experiment with new blogging tools, and carry a bicycle with me. This provided me with the opportunity to learn, the luxury of taking bike rides, and the time to keep pace with my blogging. A mixed bag but a decidedly pleasant change.
The posts which together capture this ride include:

Tinkering with technology: that’s what I do, that’s what I’ve always done.
I fiddle with this stuff all the time and there’s no reason I shouldn’t put my knowledge to use. Furthermore, I could expose these techniques to my friends, family and readers. That’s what this ever-changing post will be about. Newest items will be at the top of the list.

Mammoth Cave Loop
I won’t mince words. I love my daughters. My older daughter Courtney is a student at the University of Virginia which could be along the way of this road trip if I wanted it to be so I stopped both ways and each time Courtney graced me with some attention. She can make a father’s heart soar!
On my way west, as I entered West Virginia I drove by a National Park Service sign. These always catch my attention because they’re without exception wonderful places to visit. “Cool” I thought “I need a little break from driving so I’ll check it out.” I’d never heard of the mis-named New River but it’s one of the oldest rivers on the continent with the deepest gorges in the east. The bridge pictured above spans the New River gorge and is the longest arch bridge in the world. How great! Seeing it wasn’t even on my list!

Most of my adult life I’ve been entertained through radio and more recently through podcasts. When I’m driving on road trips I almost always have a program playing from my iPod which is loaded with hundreds of programs. It’s an endless source of entertainment and it’s wonderful!
I’ve toyed with the idea of creating my own show and signed up for a course called Radio Production at our local Public Access Channel. They have two radio studios and my class commandeers one each Saturday morning. In only our second session today we were set free on “the board” to produce a five minute show. Five minutes doesn’t sound like much does it? Well, when you’re running the studio and it’s all about your performance, it feels big!
I’m working now on a radio show proposal which I will submit in a few weeks. My guess is I’ll propose a show called “Good Pursuits” and talk about the tools and techniques, planning and execution of themed travel. It’s something I do a lot, it’s something I enjoy and it’s something I’d like to share.
